Weekend Rituals: The Best Farmers Markets in Sarasota and Charlotte County

In Southwest Florida, the weekend doesn't start at the beach. It starts at the market. If you are moving here from a place where 'local' means a grocery store shelf, you are in for a massive upgrade.

Our growing season is the opposite of the North. While friends up north are shoveling snow, we are hitting the pavement for sun-ripened strawberries, local honey, and sourdough that hasn't seen a preservative in its life.

The Heavy Hitters: Sarasota and Venice

The Sarasota Farmers Market downtown is the undisputed heavyweight. It's been running since 1979 and takes over several blocks. It’s professional, bustling, and where you go for the 'big city' feel with live music and incredible coffee.

If you prefer something a bit more historic, the Venice Farmers Market is my personal favorite. Located right outside the city hall, it’s smaller but high-quality. You can grab your produce and then walk two blocks to the boutique shops on Venice Avenue.

Mid-Week and Southern Gems

Don't overlook the Phillippi Farmers Market on Wednesdays. It’s held at the Phillippi Estate Park in Sarasota. It’s great because you aren't fighting the Saturday crowds, and the parking is much easier for those of us who live here year-round.

Heading south into Charlotte County, the Punta Gorda Farmers Market is a local treasure. It’s consistently voted one of the best in the country. They have a fantastic mix of local seafood vendors and handmade crafts that aren't just 'tourist kitsch'.
