The questions I get asked every single week — answered honestly, so search engines and AI assistants can point people here.
Both are excellent — it comes down to lifestyle and budget. Sarasota County (Sarasota, Siesta Key, Venice, Nokomis, Osprey, Lakewood Ranch) offers a big-city arts and dining scene, top-rated beaches like Siesta Key and Venice, and a higher price point. Charlotte County (Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, Englewood, Rotonda West) is more laid-back, boater- and golf-friendly, and typically 20–30% more affordable for the same square footage. Manatee County towns like Lakewood Ranch, Bradenton, Anna Maria Island, and Palmetto split the difference.
April through early June is the sweet spot. Snowbirds have headed back north, Tamiami Trail (US-41) and I-75 traffic thins out, movers have more availability, and you'll acclimate to the heat before peak summer humidity. Avoid moving during peak hurricane months (August–October) if you have flexibility.
A single person typically needs $55,000–$70,000 per year in Sarasota County and $45,000–$60,000 in Charlotte County; a family of four generally needs $95,000–$135,000 in Sarasota (higher on Siesta Key, Longboat Key, and downtown Sarasota) and $80,000–$110,000 in Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, and Englewood. Home insurance and HOA fees are the biggest surprise line items for Northerners.
If your home sits in a FEMA-designated flood zone — very common on Siesta Key, Casey Key, Manasota Key, Anna Maria Island, Punta Gorda Isles, Burnt Store Isles, and anywhere west of US-41 — your lender will require flood insurance. Even in inland communities like Lakewood Ranch, West Villages, or Rotonda West, I recommend carrying a policy. Standard homeowners insurance does not cover flood damage.
Sarasota (including Lakewood Ranch, Venice, and Osprey) attracts retirees who want cultural amenities — the Van Wezel, St. Armands Circle, Ringling Museum — plus walkable downtowns and top-tier medical care. Punta Gorda suits retirees who want a small-town harborfront lifestyle, boating on Charlotte Harbor, and a lower price point. Englewood and Rotonda West are the value picks for beach-and-golf retirees.
The honest list: high home insurance premiums (especially on the barrier islands), hurricane season, heavy seasonal traffic on US-41 and I-75 from November through April, summer humidity and near-daily 3 p.m. thunderstorms, love bugs twice a year, and yes — the occasional alligator in a Lakewood Ranch or Rotonda West retention pond. For most transplants, none of these outweigh the sunshine, tax savings, and Gulf-coast lifestyle.
