Northeast to SWFL Cost of Living 2026: The Honest Line-by-Line Swap

Moving from NJ, NY, or CT to Sarasota, Charlotte, or Manatee County? Here's the real 2026 cost-of-living comparison — taxes, insurance, groceries, and the one line that stings.
I moved from the Northeast myself, and I help families do the same version of this math every week. The headline is real: no state income tax, lower property taxes as a percentage, and a shorter cost curve almost everywhere except one line item.
But the details matter. Let's go line by line.
Florida tax savings: what NJ, NY & CT movers actually keep
Florida has no state income tax. If you're moving from NJ, NY, or CT, that alone can be worth $6,000–$25,000+ a year depending on income.
Property taxes in Sarasota, Charlotte, and Manatee counties (with homestead exemption) typically run under 1% of assessed value — a meaningful drop from most Northeast averages. Electric is comparable; heating oil disappears entirely; water bills are similar.
The one that stings: SWFL homeowners insurance
Homeowners plus wind plus flood in SWFL will run more than what you paid up north. Budget honestly — $4,000–$10,000+ per year is common depending on age of home, roof, and flood zone.
Newer construction (post-2002 code) with impact windows dramatically softens this. See my hurricane insurance post for the details.
Groceries, dining & services in Sarasota, Charlotte & Manatee
Publix is not cheap, but it's not shocking either. Costco (Sarasota, Naples) and Aldi help. Restaurants trend slightly cheaper than metro-NY prices, notably more expensive than upstate or western PA.
Landscaping is a real line item down here — either you learn to love yard work in July, or you budget $150–$300/month for a service. Same for pool care if you have one.
